Is the formal dining room really dead?

January 1, 1

For quite a while there, formal and separate dining rooms were not featured on home buyers desirables lists. In fact, you were more likely to see the words “open plan dining, living and kitchen” positioned right at the very top.

You may be surprised to know, that today, the trend of eliminating a formal dining room is slowly disappearing. After speaking with many of our clients, we have heard and seen the emphasis that is now being placed on quality family time.

Along with the increased stress and pressures of our modern, busy lives also comes the growing and strong need to retreat and truly value time with those that are most important to us.

Whether it is a challenging life event that realigns our perspectives, or whether it is those distant yet fond memories of the time we have spent growing up in a world where we had the opportunities to be more connected to our families, many of us find ourselves seeking solutions to bring people back together again.

Perhaps you dream of an evening with no technology intruding in on your family life or maybe for a split second recently you shared a moment with your family that was completely void of modern day distractions. Either way, the inclusion of a more formal dining room can provide an excellent reminder and canvas for a connected evening spent with those we don’t seem to have enough time for anymore.

Personally, at our home, we have a phone bucket located away in the ‘Butler’s Pantry’. From 7 to 9pm, 3 nights a week, all our phones get placed in the bucket so that the urge of distraction and constant connection to emails and being ‘on’ is much less of a temptation.

Often it can be a complicated task to change the way our routines typically run, but by simply having something available to us (such as a comfortably set up dining area), change can turn from a difficulty to an easy option we are more than willing to take.
