"CURL CURL"

"CURL CURL" - The river of life on the Northern Beaches

The name Curl Curl appears to be the original Aboriginal name for the larger area of Manly Vale, Freshwater and Queenscliff. The name Curl Curl may have been derived from a Dharuk Aboriginal phrase curial curial, meaning river of life. The name Curl Curl Lagoon was originally applied to Manly Lagoon, which empties into the ocean at Queenscliff.

Another idea is that the names Curl Curl and South Curl Curl are said to come from an Aboriginal word thought to mean 'lagoon' which would refer to nearby Manly Lagoon.

Curl Curl beach faces the east-southeast and averages 1.6 metre waves. The beach is approximately 1.2 km long and is divided into North Curl Curl and South Curl Curl. Both ends of the beach have their own surf life-saving club, car park, and café/kiosk. Curl Curl claims to be one of Sydney's best surfing beaches!

Curl Curl and North Curl Curl, affectionately known as “Curly” to those of us from the area, sit at the perfect convergence of lush green space and luxuriant Pacific Coast sand. A must-do in Curly is the Curl Curl to Freshwater coastal walk, starting at Freshwater Beach up to McKillop lookout and along the boardwalk to South Curl Curl lifesavers Club where coffee is served at Gusto on the Beach cafe. The walk then meanders along the dog-friendly reserves to North Curl Curl Beach.
